IRÈNE LAMONTAGNE BOUCHARD
Native du Lac St-Jean au Québec. Elle a enseigné pendant quelques années dans les écoles primaires de son village natal, St-Prime. Au cours des années ’80, elle emménage à Tecumseh, Ontario.
Elle est entrée dans le système des écoles franco-ontariennes d’abord comme suppléante, puis enseignante, ensuite aide-enseignante et aide-élève auprès des élèves en difficulté d’apprentissage du français. ( enseignement individuel )
Pour suppléer à la pénurie de matériel didactique adapté et convenant aux besoins spécifiques de ses élèves, elle élabore du matériel-maison manuscrit : pictogrammes, petites histoires, comptines, chanson et listes de mots écrits à la main sur des feuillets ou dans des livrets, affiches-support, cartes-éclair pour entraîner à la lecture rapide etc.

Dans mon enfance, je me souviens d’avoir trouvé difficile l’apprentissage de la lecture. Je n’aimais pas lire. Enfant de type visuel, j’avais besoin de VOIR pour APPRENDRE. Comme le fait de lire était ardu pour moi, je suis à même aujourd’hui de comprendre les petits en difficulté et de savoir par intuition ce dont ils peuvent avoir besoin pour retenir ce qu’on leur enseigne. Je me souviens d’avoir stimulé ma mémoire pendant tout mon primaire par des petits dessins que j’inventais.

Native of Lac St-Jean in Quebec, Irene L. Bouchard, taught for a few years in primary schools in her native village of St-Prime Quebec. In the 80s, she moved to Tecumseh, Ontario where she entered the system of Franco-Ontarian schools first as a substitute teacher , then part time teacher, then assistant teacher and finaly taking on her role as teacher's assistant and having to help students with learning dificulties learn French. To supplement the training material shortage adapted and suited to the specific needs of her students, Irene develops a teaching method designedthat would cosist of manuscript icons, stories, rhymes, songs, and lists of words written by hand on sheets or booklets, posters carrier, flashcards for driving speed reading etc.
TESTIMONY OF THE AUTHOR
In my childhood, I remember to have found it difficult learning how to read. I did not like to read. I knew I was a visual type of child, I needed to SEE in order to LEARN. Giving that reading was difficult so dificult for me, I am now able to understand the small difficulties and know intuitively what someone may need to retain what they are taught. I remember to have stimulated my memory throughout my primary by small drawings that I invented.

J’ai donc décidé d’apporter aux enfants d’aujourd’hui ce qui m’a tant manqué étant jeune. Dans les paragraphes qui suivent, je vais vous raconter ce qui constitue en quelque sorte la genèse de cette méthode conçue spécialement pour les enfants dont le cheminement scolaire est jonché de difficultés, les dyslexiques et les autres… Il m’a été donné de l’expérimenter aussi avec succès auprès d’enfants en classes régulières comme ceux provenant de familles anglophones qui fréquentent les écoles françaises de l’Ontario.
Lors de ma première année de travail comme aide-élève, on m’avait confié un jeune garçon que l’on croyait incapable d’apprendre à lire. On avait pensé que je devrais le suivre pendant de nombreuses années. À la grande surprise de tous, ayant appris avec cette méthode de lecture, ce petit a pu suivre la classe régulière dès l’année suivante sans aucun support de ma part, il lisait très bien. Par la suite, encouragée par les personnes-ressources du milieu éducatif, j’ai continué à mettre toute mon énergie dans l’amélioration de ma méthode: J’APPRENDS BIEN AVEC TOI JAPPY, par amour des enfants, trait de caractère que je tiens de mon père.

So I decided to bring the children of today that I missed so much when I was a young girl. In the paragraphs that follow, I'll tell you what is sort of the genesis of this method designed specifically for children whose academic progress is strewn with difficulties, dyslexia and other dificulties. I have been given the privelege to also experiment successfully my teaching method with children in regular classes as those from English-speaking families who attend French schools in Ontario.
During my first year working as a teacher assistant, had given me a young boy once thought incapable of learning how to read. We had thought I should have to keep tutoring and teaching him for many years. To everyone's surprise, after having learned this reading method, that little boy was able to follow the rest of his class the following year without any additional help from me. He read very well and with confidence. Subsequently, encouraged by the contacts of the educational environment, I continued to put all my energy into improving my method: I LEARN WELL WITH YOU JAPPY... and for the love for the children, a character trait that I carry on from my father.
